And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication; and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have waxed rich through the abundance of her indulgences pleasures." ……… How much she hath glorified herself and lived voluptuously! That much torment and sorrow give back to her; for she saith in her heart, ‘I sit a queen and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.' Therefore shall her plagues come in one day" death and mourning and famine, and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. ………. The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing and saying, `Alas! Alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and precious stones and pearls! For in one hour such great riches have come to nought!' …. weeping and wailing, saying, `Alas! Alas, that great city, wherein all that had ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her extravagances! For in one hour is she made desolate!' Revelation 18

In Revelation chapter 18 we read of the destruction of political Babylon, whereas, in chapter 17 we read of the destruction of spiritual Babylon. I like to think of it as the economic portion of Babylon’s judgment, for in one hour the economic mega center of the world will be made desolate! To me, it is hard to imagine an economy that impacted the whole world was gone in an hour, but we know that in the future this will happen just as the Bible predicts. Verse 17 tells us, “For in one hour such riches have come to nought.” Also, in verse 18 it put it this way, “For in one hour is she made desolate.” In MSN Money’s article, The huge threat to the US economy, Jubak describes the collapse of Fannie and Freddie Mac would not only devastate our economy but would in fact impact every economy in the world. Because the fall of the US economy would be so devastating and felt around the whole world, many, like me, have thought that the economy described in Revelation 18 may well be the US’s. Some, on the other hand, think that the Bible is literally speaking of a rebuilt Babylon that will be the center of the world for spiritual abomination and wealth. Either way, think with me for a moment what that means to the US, the leading economy in the world at the moment. If the Bible is speaking spiritually of the US having the same spirit as Babylon of old, then obviously the US economy is doomed for the swift and certain judgment of God! If Babylon of old is going to resurface and become the super power of world trade, then the US will still go off the scene in the last days because the enormity of the world economic center that the Bible speaks of here would only leave room for one super power. The devastation spoke of here, brought all the merchant’s of the world to a stand still. All they could do was cry, for the economy that made them rich was gone in one hour!

If she is going to re-appear, where is Babylon of old? This to me is ironic, but Babylon is in the very country that our troops are occupying right now, Iraq! Before his death, Saddam Hussein spoke of rebuilding the ancient city. In the article Saddam's Babylonian Palace, you can read of his ambition to restore Babylon which isn’t very far from Bagdad. Wouldn’t that be tragic for the US to spend all the lives and resources for the conquering and rebuilding of Iraq, and at the same time be creating the very place that would kick us out of our spot economically in the world?

One thing is for certain, if you put your trust in the economy you are in for a rude awakening, for no doubt it is dwindling away! If you have put your trust in the military might of the US there is no guarantee that it can save you, for one day it too shall fail. Put you faith in God and in Him alone, for He will never leave you or forsake you. Call on the Name of Jesus, for the Bible tells that there is salvation in no other name!
